Much as the words reveal, a body cavity search involves looking into parts of the body that are not readily observable, even if the person is naked. It involves looking into, with a light, and often feeling with a latex-gloved hand, the mouth, ears, vagina, and rectum of the person being examined.

A body cavity search involves inspecting a person to make sure they are not smuggling contraband. There is a visual body cavity search in which a flashlight is used to search the nostrils, ears, mouth, penis, vagina, and rectum. A manual body cavity search involves probing into those same cavities.

An inspection includes patting down the naked body completely. The mouth, nose, and ears are visually and physically inspected with a finger sweep generally. Anal and vaginal openings are checked by having the person squat and cough to expel any foreign objects. More in depth physical searches may be performed if there is suspicion of contraband.
