Most embalming fluids contain formaldehyde, methanol, and ethanol, and depending on the fluid the percentages of each can vary. It works by making it so cell proteins from the body aren't digestible by bacteria, much like how rubbing alcohol can't be drank.

Embalming fluids typically contain an alcohol like methanol or ethanol, and formaldehyde. The alcohol sterilizes the subject while the formaldehyde stabilizes proteins to prevent them from breaking down. Not all embalming fluids are the same, and mostly contain varying percentages of these components.
