What is diffusion when talking about a cell?

It's not the same as osmosis but I don't get it.

Diffusion the name for the crossing of molecules other than water across the cell membrane by moving down the concentration gradient.

Diffusion is when a solute moves through the cell's semipermeable membrane because it is both small and nonpolor. These solutes move from an area of high concentration to low concentration.
