The xbox 360 has three regions, NTSC-UC, NTCS-J and PAL. These all are from different parts of the world. If you get a console from another region, you will have to buy the game which is made for that region and your console might also use a different power supply.

Imported Xbox 360 consoles are region locked. This means that you can only use games from the region it came from. If it happened to be a Japanese console, you'd need to use NTSC-J encoded games. Otherwise, you will get a disc read error.

The difference are that you don't have a warranty, in many cases. The region can be different, example if you live in Europe and you have an xbox from US, the games you buy from your local store won't work, only region free games.

An imported Xbox 360 will allow you to play game discs that are coded for a different region than the one you are in. A lot of western gamers buy imported consoles to play the vast collection of Japanese-style games that aren't available in the US market.
