Cryogenic freezing is the process of studying how materials behave at temperatures below about minus 238 degrees F. Most materials can be chilled to that temperature rather easily, but the main area of interest is what happens to them when they warm up. Generally, materials survive the freezing process but can't return to their original state without damage.

It is freezing at really low temperatures. It is often used for freezing at a cellular level. I know lab techs freeze tissue samples. It is also used in freeze drying of foods and other materials for long term storage. Physics scientists also use it to study what happens in space, since it is so cold in space too.

Cells or whole tissues can be frozen to a very low temperature, typically around the temperature of liquid nitrogen. This stops all biological processes, and if protecting techniques are used the cells or tissues can be preserved without damage. This is currently only achievable with small samples, or suspensions. Blood and small embryos are examples.
