Calcite is a crystalline form of calcium carbonate, with a hardness of 3. Usually, it looks clear or white, but can be almost any shade. It's very common, making up about 4% of the Earth's crust by weight. The name derives from the Greek chalx, which means "lime." Most calcite can be found in Mexico or the U.S.

Calcite is calcium carbonate. It is colourless or white but other colours are created by the fact that it frequently contains impurities.
