Do not use jewelry cleaner to clean your vintage costume jewelry as it sometimes stains and damages older pieces. Believe it or not, plain white toothpaste works best for this type of jewelry. Just brush it on with an old toothbrush and rinse it off very good.

You can take them to a jewelers for cleaning if you don't want to do it yourself. Otherwise you can find jewelry cleaners at the store. Look on the bottle to make sure it works on the metal that your jewelery is made of. Some are not meant to be used on stones so watch for that.

An ultrasonic cleaner is your best bet. This is a small device with a little tank that holds cleaning solution; you put your jewelery in the tank and switch it on. Ultra-high audio frequencies are then sent through the liquid, loosening the dirt and grime. You can get these at Target, Wal-Mart or similar stores fairly cheaply.

The best way to clean costume jewerly is to first get a silver polishing cloth. You can get them from most retailers for 5 or 6 dollars. They are safe for genuine silver, sterling silver, and silver plated jewelry. You can rub the jewerly with the cloth and it will clean it right up. They also make gold polishing cloths.

There are several ways, but really the best solution is probably finding a professional cleaner. Depending on the jewelery, on that uses a Sonic Cleaner could do wonders quickly.
