What is baby shower etiquette when it is the second child?

Second child baby showers should really only be given if either the second child is the opposite sex of the first or if there is at least 5 years between the first and the second. Ask for or give gift cards, diapers and neccessities not leftover from the first child.

Although it would be helpful, it is not proper etiquette to have a baby shower for a second baby. You have already received gifts from your friends and family. It would be better to simply send a gift when the child is born.

Traditionally, baby showers are just for the first born. For a second child, it's proper to organize a smaller party, for family and close friends. You can also drop hints that people are expected to bring less expensive gifts, only things that cannot be re-used from the first child.

For me it is still a new life and I treat it as such. Just because someone has already had a child does not mean that the new baby is not important.
