A purpose of the U. S. government is to protect its citizens (common men) from enemies of the state, foreign or domestic. For example, Al Qaeda requires a common defense.

To "provide for the common defense" in the preamble to the Constitution is generally interpreted to mean to protect the people of the United States from foreign attack. In this case "common" means for everyone.

The term generally refers to the federal government's role and authority for setting up and controlling the military (an army, navy, etc. ).

Common defense includes invasion of the United States by another country, which started with the War of 1812 and ended with World War 2 (unless you include the War on Terror which started with the 09/11/2001 attacks in New York). It included Native American attacks on the colonies, including the French-Indian wars that threatened settlers in the Northeast.
