The best product to use is CLR. It is highly poisonous in both caustic and gas forms, so be sure to have a window open and good gloves on.

There are many products on the market but white vinegar will work about as well. Vinegar is acidic and will dissolve the alkaline lime. You just need to devise a way to soak the fixtures and the affected areas.

For lime scale I found that the cleaning product titled CLR works very well for me, even on lime scale that has sat for quite some time.
