In general, import automobiles are easier and cheaper to maintain, given a few caveats. Stick with well-known Japanese makers such as Honda and Toyota. The Honda Civic, Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla have excellent records for reliability, as long as you go with the four cylinder engine. Take care of these and they'll last near forever.

Pretty much all cars require the same maintenance except at separate intervals. This means you should look for a car manufacturer like BMW that offers a free-maintenance package. That means they will do all the maintenance for you over a set period of time.

Put simply most manufacturers make a very good product these days. I would probably stick to US or Japanese built products. Just pick a car that suits your life style, taste and budget. Stick to the maintenance requirements of your vehicle and you will have years of great service. Find a good shop for service.
