A tsunami is a large wave that is caused by an undersea disturbance. The most common cause is an earthquake miles to even thousands of miles from where the tsunami hits. Landslides or volcanic activity can also be the cause. The disturbance will move almost undetected through the open ocean and will then increase in size as it approaches landfall.

A tsunami is a giant wave caused by a disturbance in the ocean which thrusts the seawater upward, such as an earthquake or volcanic eruption. Tsunami can travel hundreds of miles until they hit land, where they can reach heights of tens of feet.
