The second largest earthquake ever recorded occurred in the Indian Ocean, off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. It caused huge tsunami waves to radiate out from that location. The number of people killed topped 230,000 across fourteen countries. The hardest hit nations were Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka,

The 2004 tsunami was triggered by a massive underwater earthquake in the Indian Ocean. The earthquake was measured as a 9.1-9.3 magnitude quake. The giant wave killed 227,898, according to the United State Geological Survey. One political outcome was a ceasefire in a separatist conflict in the Indonesian province of Aceh. The government and separatists later signed a peace agreement.

On December 26th, 2004, a tsunami struck Thailand. Asia and Africa were also affected. This tsunami was caused by a distruption of the sea bed and caused thousands of deaths.
