It's the part of an electric motor or electric generator that encloses the rotor. More or less it's the can in which the rotating parts rotate. There are also motors in which the stator rotates and the rotator goes in the opposite direction or doesn't move at all. It may act as the field magnet.

In an electric motor, or in an electric generator, there are two main parts: the rotor and the stator. The rotor is the part of the motor or generator does the actually spinning. The stator is the magnetized, stationary part of the motor or generator that the rotor fits into.
