A split HVAC unit is when the condenser and compressor are located outside and are connected by refrigerant lines to the cooling coils and fan inside the building. This is in contrast to a packaged unit where all the components are located in one location and both the outside air and inside cooled air are ducted to their final location.

It is when you have one unit inside and one outside. The indoor unit is usually the part that has the evaporator and the outdoor unit is the one that usually has the compressor and condenser. The units are connected electrically and by the copper tubing used to transport the refrigerant.

A split HVAC unit is one that comes in two separate pieces. One piece contains the heat pump and the condenser, the other piece contains the evaporator. One is installed inside, and the other outside. There are usually fans in both units, and wiring to accommodate the whole equipment.
