A promise ring is a smaller version of an engagement ring. It is usually given to someone by their sweetheart and is a symbol of intent for marriage before an engagement ring.

A promise ring is usually like an engagement ring for going steady. Promising that you will be with this person and sometimes its a precursor to an engagement ring. It is a starting ring for a relationship but not too heavy.

As I understand it, they are a sort of pre-engagement ring. Usually for younger couples between their teen years and early twenties. It can also be used in the place of a true engagement ring if the couple is short of money for a time and still wishes to make some sort of visible commitment.
