You will need to wait until the piercing is fully healed. With proper aftercare, generally 6 to 8 weeks is safe.

I waited about three to four weeks to change my tongue ring. Now it's been about four months and I still think it's healing, I still feel a little bump in my tongue and a weird sensation, but I hear that takes a while to go away.

You should wait about a month or so before you put in a new ring. It might flare up and start swelling if you remove it to soon.
