Keep in mind that every child will develop at their own time, the expected to have on average 20 different words.

An 18 month old has basic communication skills. Every child is different but most babies at that age can say small sentences,and are able to communicate to you what they want.

Your 18 month old should be saying around 5 words. He or she will understand around 50 words. He or she will also start to be able to take direction from you.
