A literature survey is a review of different literary works. The survey can look at various novels of a certain period, or it can examine the different works of a single author. Generally, the purpose of a literature survey is exposure.

When starting to do any kind of academic research it is often necessary to do a literature survey. This does not mean literature in the sense of novels and poems, but scholarly books and papers on the chosen subject. The survey states what is there and comments on it all.
