Counting the legs would tell you whether it is an insect or arachnid (6 or 8 respectively). If it has 6 legs it is not a tick.

The insect is called a bed bug. They live in the walls, curtains, carpet, and clothing. They come out at night while you are asleep and feed much like a tick. The only way to remove bed bugs is wash all clothing, shampoo all carpets including mattress and call an exterminator.
