It depends on what you are talking about. It could mean a hardware tool with a 6-sided bit that is used to secure items so that a normal screwdriver cannot undo them. In wireless networking for computers, the hex key is the encryption key you enter into your devices in Hexadecimal notation.

A 'hex key' is the same thing as an 'allen wrench'. It is also referred to as a 'hex wrench' in some places/countries. The 'hex' reference is derived from the word defining its shape, a hexagon. These 'keys' or 'wrenches' are made in different standard and metric sizes.

A hex key is a six-sided bar of metal, often bent into an "L" or attached in sets that fold into a handle for driving fasteners with hexagonal heads.

Hex keys are often called allen wrenches and are often used in flat-pack furniture as well as machinery. socket-head cap screws also require hex keys to tighten/loosen.
