Most cars now days are equipped with the knowledge to play music until the door has been opened. Volkswagen have this feature. You can take your key out of the engine and your radio will still play until your door becomes ajar.

It sounds like the stereo has been connect to a power source that isn't activated by your key. This in common when someone installs a aftermarket stereo and want to listen to music with out the key. You can re-wir the radio power lead to get power from a source that is on only wit the key on.

The problem is most likley because the power wire (RED) or remote wire (BLUE) is wired in wrong. It must be wired into a power source that is only on when the key is turned forward. One way to fix it quickly is to wire it directly to the fuse panel to the ignition wire.

I am not aware of a car where the audio should be working when the key isn't in the ignition and engaged. Sounds like you need to have your car looked at by a mechanic for an electrical short.
