What you can do is start by getting some stamps with a good value that have some character your children enjoy. That is a good way to get them interested in the hobby. You can always add more valuable less well known stamps later.

Remove stamps from incoming mail ( soak in warm water and they will slide off). Ask friends and co workers to do the same. There are wonderful stamps available.

There are usually inexpensive kits at bookstores, that come with stamps. You could also save the stamps on the mail you get. Maybe ask your neighbors to do the same.
