The best way to avoid a skunk is to be sure there is no food or food scraps exposed at a camp site and to walk away slowly when you encounter one. An antidote to a skunk's own odorous repellent is a very large quantity of tomato sauce and then a thorough washing.

Garlic is a possible option; its odor is more than any skunk wants. Unfortunately though it repels people as well, so you have to watch out for that as well.

Try this natural replellent, placing piles of cayenne pepper or any hot pepper powder around the perimeter of your garden area.
