A cold air intake is just an aftermarket air intake system. Typically they are a series of piping, couplers, and a conical filter. The where originally designed to reach outside of the engine-bay to get cool fresh air. Most of them however just pull warm air from under the hood.

Cold air intakes are aftermarket engine parts that replace the factory intake piping and filter. They are supposed to relocate the air inlet to somewhere that the air is cooler.
