The word 'bindi' comes from the Sanskrit 'bindu' which means dot or drop. It refers to a decoration worn on the forehead and orignating in South and South East Asia, most commonly India. Traditionally the bindi is a red painted dot in the center of the forehead but it can also be another type of decoration or symbol.
