A bag file was a file typically associated with America Online Instant Messenger. I believe mostly in older versions such as 6.0. Always be carefull clicking on file extensions you do not recognize as they may be a virus or another malicious program which can damage your computer or cause data loss.

It's a file generated by several programs such as AOL Instant Messenger and the game "Emperor, Battle for Dune". It seems to be mostly associated with AOL products though.

I think your mistaking bag file for bak file. A back file is a file that is backed up just in case of losing your first file. It is the file saved elsewhere so you can locate it in case of data loss.
