After a car is impounded, the police department is notified. This is aid them for your eventual call to report that your car has been stolen. After you have determined that you car has been impounded, you must pay a fine to have the towing company (or city) release the car back to you.

When a vehicle is impunded it is first towed away. It is then dropped off at the nearest impound lot where it is recorded on file and stored in a parking spot corresponding with the file number. It is held for 30-60 days before being sold at auction for a reduced price. To get it back, you pay a fee.

Well it is towed and stored in a secured lot. It will be held there until it is released by the lot after all fees have been paid.

They tow your car to an impound lot. What happens next depends on why it was impounded. If the car is "subject to forfeiture" they keep it and sell it. If it is not subject to forfeiture, you usually get 30 days to pay fines and fees.
