As a car's transmission fluid gets hot it will start expand. If there happens to be a clog or blockage somewhere in the system this can cause seals to leak due to the pressure. Which in turn will lead to the transmission overheating which will drastically reduce the life of a cars transmission.

Begin by checking the sensor connection. Is it properly connected? Check that it is locked in place, and that all the connectors are clean. Make sure there are no leaves or other debris or trash in the front grill. Pressure washing the front grill and under the hood will sometimes help. If all else fails, see an automotive technician.

The transmission may begin to slip, emit an odor, not go into gear properly or fail completely. Stop driving and check the fluid level and add the proper transmission fluid if it is low.

Well heat is a big reason for transmission failures. As the fluid heats up it begins to get thinner and get better at protecting the metal surface and making the transmission shift. This lead to clutch slippage among other things. The fluid deteriorates faster the hotter it gets. Towing and hard driving are the main reason the transmission can overheat.
