Music downloads from pay, sharing and pirate sites have ushered in the demise of the brick-and-mortar music stores. Virgin Records was sold to Zawi in 2007; Zawi went bust in 2008. Virgin Megastore, the flagship store on Times Square, shut down in the mid-2008. Store overseas closed around the same time as well.

They ran into fianacial trouble so they had to shut down most of them. This was due in part to rapid expansion and the economy. There are a few still open around the country.

The Virgin Megastores in the U.S. struggled for about ten years in the face of iTunes and other online music retailers. There were 23 stores that eventually dwindled to two: NYC closed June 1009 and the Hollywood, California location shortly after. Megastores operate in the UK, Ireland and the Middle East now as "zavvi."

The Virgin Megastores locations in the United States and England all closed. However, there are still over 100 locations worldwide, primarily in Europe and Asia.

The Virgin Records Stores closed down. Record stores are not a good business to be in right now when people can buy so easily online. They weren't making money, so they closed.

They went out of business. For many years, CD sales have been declining around the world as people download, for free or for fee, their media files off of the Internet. Before the stores went out of business, they had been previously divested by Richard Branson's Virgin Group that still runs the airline, Virgin Atlantic, for example.

The advances in digital music downloads have finally brought record store giant Virgin Records to its knees. There are still many other record stores around, though.

They over exanded when the economy was booming and then they fell victim to it. Most of the stores were no longer profitable so they had to scale back and closed most of the stores. A few are still around but it is very few.

A lot of these stores have gone out of business with the recession and the decline of the record industry that has been caused by online music stores.
