A popular hair in the 50's was the beehive. My grandmother had one in her old high school photos as did many of the other girls. This literally looks like a beehive.

The hairstyles of the 1950's were all about soft and curly. The bouffant was most popular, as worn by Jackie Kennedy. Or pull your hair back into a bun and wrap a chiffon scarf around it. For men, the ducktails and sideburns were very popular.

In the 1950s many people both male and female wore hats, and hairstyles tended to be simple to draw attention to the varous derbies and fascinators that were the main focus of a hairstyle. Both men and women tended to wear both hats and gloves, usually for a party these would match.

In the 50s, hair was very full on top and usually flipped outward on the bottom. This can probably be achieved with round brushes, curlers, and hair spray. The short-banged Betty Paige style was also popular.
