A 2.5 gallon aquarium is tiny so you want to stick with a couple fish or a small group of tiny fish. A small group of Fancy Guppies, Zebra Danios, or a pair of mollies would all be good choices. I'd also add a live plant or two to add oxygen to the water in that tiny of an environment.

Freshwater fish can include guppies, danios, neon tetras and some other tropical fish. There is an inch per gallon rule. For every gallon you can keep 1 inch of fish. 2.5 gallons would mean 2.5 inches of fish. Great alternative are aquarium shrimp.

It depends on the size of the fish. You should never buy just one fish as their habit is to be in schools. I would recommend 3-4 serpae tetras, which are mid-range swimmers, and a Cory catfish to swim along the bottom and entertain you with his cleaning antics. Remember to always keep the water pH at the correct level!

Guppies or white cloud minnows will last the longest in your tank. Both species do not grow larger than 2 inches and will be just fine a small tank.
