The Sport of free climbing has grown very popular. Its popularity has grown because of advances in climbing equipment that make climbing safer. Equipments include climbing shoes, rope, general-purpose devices for connecting things, nylon cord, harnesses for connecting climbers to things, devices for applying friction to the rope and devices for wedging into the rock.

A leader and a follower ascend the climb in pitches. First leader climbs the pitch,wedging pieces of protection to the rock and attaching the rope to them with carabiners.
