You need to know the legalities, which side is easier to climb, the type of weather that will/can be expected when you are planning to climb it, the success rate of climbers (and the death rate, or if anybody has ever died), the altitude of the mountain and gear which will be needed due to the terrain.

You need to be very honest with yourself regarding your climbing expertise. Have you climbed mountains of similar height before? Another serious consoderation is the time of year you will be making your climb. Weather is a major reason for climber tragedies.

You need to assess your general fitness, as Rainier takes multiple days of strenuous climbing. You need to have or be able to rent winter mountaineering gear such as mountaineering boots, an ice axe, crampons, and cold weather clothing. If you are not going with one of the three approved guide companies, you need a permit.
