The USDA food pyramid is in the shape of a square pyramid. It shows a person on one side climbing up stairs. The front is split into 6 bands of different thicknesses. It illustrates the food categories of grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, meant and beans and lipids.

The USDA food pyramid looks more like a fan made of folded paper, or a set of stairs in the shape of a triangle. As such, continuing to call it a "food pyramid" is something of a misnomer, since it no longer is a pyramid with the idea of graduated categories of size and importance.
