What does the phrase "grasp the nettle" mean?

It is an idiomatic expression. It means to tackle something difficult. If you brush up against a nettle, it can inject toxins into you by way of its needles. But if you grab hold of it is the direction the needles grow, you won't get stuck.

A nettle is a plant covered with hairs that will sting you if you brush it softly, but if you grasp it firmly, the stinging hairs are pressed flat and are relatively harmless. Likewise, it is a good idea to deal firmly with unpleasant issues, rather than letting them fester.
