The pancreas produces chemicals that are vital to the digestion of food. It also regulates blood sugar and is a stomach gland. It also secretes insulin and other hormones essential to normal body functioning. It also helps to metabolize foods that the stomach is less efficient in metabolizing. It secretes bile into the digestive tract.

One of the most important hormones to the body, insulin, is produced by the pancreas. This function regulates the body's sugar. If the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin, diabetes is the result. Pancreatic juices help the digetive tract. The pancreas creates important enzymes to break down starches in food.
