The LEEP procedure is utilized to treat cervical problems in women. When a woman receives an abnormal pap smear she is given a culposcopy. If the results of that examination are poor a LEEP procedure is often ordered. In the procedure, a physician uses a wire loop that has an electrical current running through it to excise the affected area.

LEEP is a procedure to remove cells that are abnormal in the cervix. These cells can be precancer and LEEP makes it possible to remove intact tissue for biopsy. The procedure uses low-voltage current, is simple and inexpensive.
