What does the "ends justify the means" mean?

There are two general lines of thought about working to accomplish a goal. Some people try to do everything legally and ethically, without anyone getting hurt. The other view uses the "end jusifies the means". That means that they are willing to cheat, steal, lie, or see someone get hurt if it means the goal is accomplished.

It means that as long as you get good results, it doesn't matter what bad things you did along the way. The "means" become good because "the ends" are good.
