MP4 stands for MPEG-4. Essentially it is a short way of defining a bunch of compression and converstion formats for both audio and visual digital files. It supports all of the previous MPEG layers but also includes digital rights management for companies like itunes.

It is an ipod format for videos and music files. (Videos mainly). The full file extension is mpeg4 (Motion Picture Experts Group - 4). This codec/format allows for dvd quality video in much smaller video dimensions and file sizes, making it ideal for ipods and other assorted mp3 players. Yep.

It stands for MPEG-4. It was designated by Moving Picture Experts Group(MPEG). It was originally created back in 1998 but became an international standard in 2000. This format is based upon Apple's QuickTime format.
