Monolaurin is approved as an additive to things like food and deodorant, not as a medicine, though it has been used to prevent the spread of Monolaurin lipid-coated viruses - like the AIDS virus - and some bacteria. Research has shown it can prevent the transmission of the simian AIDS virus - but no studies for people yet.

Monolaurin or lauric acid is a naturally occurring dietary supplement; it is an oil commonly found in coconuts. It has not been clinically tested or proven to treat any diseases, but some believe that it helps strengthen the immune system, protecting from the common cold, flu and other viral infections.
