A mesa is a raised flat surface, like a tabletop, but of course much larger. Think of a mountain with the top half sliced off, leaving a flat plain surrounded by cliffs.

"Mesa" is Spanish for table. It refers to many flat mountains in the American Southwest which rise hundreds or thousands of feet and have a flat top.

Mesa is a table-shaped piece of land with a flat top and sides that are usually steep cliffs. The word mesa comes from Spanish and actually means table. Mesas are common in the southwestern part of the United States but also in Spain, North and South Africa, Arabia, India and Australia.
