Beeps indicate an error or warning. Series of long and short of beeps at the POST (Power On System Test) indicate different errors depending on your system.

This can have many causes, but when your PC beeps after starting up, it usually indicates that certain hardware devices could not be found, that is they are either not there or defect. Look in your motherboard's manual for an explanation on beeping sequences.
