The person literally has an abnormal appearance of white matter in the brain. White matter is the stuff around enclosing your nerve cells to sort of help electrical impulses to travel faster throughout the body. It is referred to as nonspecific if no one cause can be singled out.

Since white matter is used to transport messages amongst the nervous system, a nonspecific white matter disease prohibits signals to different parts of the body. Depending on the severity of the disease, the afflicted area will have a degree of effects ranging from weakness to paralysis.

Non specific white matter disease refers to changes found on the cerebral white matter of the brain that cannot be linked to a specific causative factor. Changes may occur because of radiation or chemotherapy or because of demylination (myelin protects the nerve cells in the brain). A definitive diagnosis involves evaluating the changes within the context of the person's symptoms.
