The lipid pattern of A and B refer to the size of the Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) molecules in the blood. The pattern is important as people with pattern A have a low chance of developing atherosclerosis whereas the chances are higher with pattern B.

Different plasma lipid and lipoprotein analytical techniques results are correlated, a consistent measurement difference. This has in that the proportion of individuals identified as meeting the metabolic syndrome dyslipidemia criteria, "at risk" based apo B or LDL particle number, and the LDL pattern B phenotype will differ of analytical method.
