Diseases affecting a hamster's skin include ringworm and mites, both of which require treatment by a vet. It is not unusual for hamsters to experience some hair loss, particularly in older pets. This condition can occur seasonally as well. If the skin appears red or itchy, a vet should be seen. Cedar bedding can also cause itchiness or allergies.

Fur loss and skin problems can be a sign of mites, which is a type of parasite that is found on the skin. They are not visible to the human eye. It is highly recommended that you take the hamster to the vet so it will receive proper diagnosis.

You need to take him/her to an EXOTICS vet for a checkup. It could be something as easy to clear up as mites or a curable fungal infection, or something more serious. Unless you take your pet to a qualified profesional with rodent experience (i.e. not a cat/dog vet), you can't know for sure.

If your hamster is loosing fur or having skin problems it could be a seroius health problem. First of all make sure the hamster has water and it is not dehydrated. Also make sure that you give it small animal vitamins (can be purchased in pet store).

Your hamster may be suffering from a skin allergy or condition that has caused fur loss and has made the skin itchy and red. Also, hamsters can have fleas just like dogs and this could also lead to fur loss and skin problems as the hamster begins to scratch from the fleas.
