Typically, they dig a hole for the molting process but there is no 100% sure way to know. They appear lifeless or near death when they molt. Check back after a few days to see if your tank develops a rotten fishy smell. If it does, then its probably dead.

It is extremely hard to tell if one is molting or actually dead. Its safe to assume it is molting. Try not to disturb it. If the hermit crab has in fact died it will start to smell in just a few days.

When a crab is molting it will look very limp and lifeless - sometime it can be difficult to distinguish between a crab that is dead and one that is molting! The body will usually be partway out of the shell. Do not disturb it during this time - if there are other crabs in the tank try to protect.
