What does genetics have to do with red hair?

For red hair you need 2 recessive "red hair genes". If you have either one or no genes for red hair, you will not have red hair. The same goes for blonde. For example, if you get one gene for dark hair and one gene for blonde or red hair, you will get dark hair.

The pigment in hair is determined by what genes are available as well as what you eat. A lot of specific red/orange/yellow pigment will tint hair if it's fair enough, but most of what color hair you have is inborn.
