I have a friend who owns several large parrots and macaws. She has to regularly dust the birds with a special miticide and also treat their cages. Depluming mites are endemic to all birds, as far as I know. They actually eat the barbs of feathers, as well as skin shed. A bad infestation can kill commercial birds.
