Cortisol is the bodys "flight or fright" hormone. When you are scared or stressed your body releases Cortisol into your blood stream. Cortisol causes the cells of your body to release sugar (to use as fuel if you need to run), it speeds up your heart rate (to get you ready to run or fight).

Produced by the adrenal cortex, cortisol is a hormone that responds to anxiety by raising blood pressure. It increases blood sugar levels, weakens immune response, and is an anti-diuretic.

Cortisol is the hormone that is released when your body is under physiologic stress such as illness or injury. In general, it ensures there is enough blood glucose to keep your brain alive if you can't eat. It does this by activating mechanisms to breakdown your body's proteins.
